Dear Friends and Supporters,

IF YOU LIKE PLANTING TREES, join us on February 5 when Sunfield and four other schools will be planting trees along Tarboo Creek on Tarboo Wildlife Preserve, owned by Northwest Watershed Institute, a non-profit based in Port Townsend. We’ll be planting native trees that grew on the landscape historically, including Doug Fir, Sitka Spruce, Western Red Cedar, Pacific Crabapple, Red Alder, Big Leaf Maple, Willow and others.

These trees provide shade that keeps the water cool for fish; leaves and trunks create a food source for insects. When they mature, the trees fall into the creek to create important salmon habitat. The trees store carbon dioxide and create oxygen.

This will be the 7th annual Plant-a-Thon. We expect 250 adults and children to plant 5,000 seedlings. Survival rate for the 2005 seedlings was 84%; for the 2006 seedlings it was 91%. You can join us as a tree planter and as a crew leader.

Our family participated last year and had a wonderful time. If interested, please call Michele here at Sunfield.

Best wishes,
Jake
