SUNFIELD FARM & WALDORF SCHOOL E-newsletter—September 29,2010

A big part of Sunfield’s mission is to be a place where children can learn about how food is grown and raised, how to take care of our planet, and how to live in ways that nurture themselves and others. With the start of a new school year, we have already had a visit from Kit Pennell’s 4th grade science class from Chimacum Elementary.

We are preparing for our first overnighter, early next month. Five third grade classes from Waldorf schools in Seattle and Olympia are coming up for our first “3rd Grade Plough Day Jamboree.” They are studying agriculture and will immerse themselves on the farm for two days and a night. Included in their activities will be ploughing and watching draft horses plow a field, cutting down wheat, threshing, grinding and baking bread. They will rotate through these activities as well as farm chores, including caring for the animals and working in the gardens. They will have time to explore our forest and enjoy being on the farm and away from the city. This is the beginning of fulfilling one of our dreams—to be the farm school for the Waldorf schools in the Pacific Northwest.

We invite you to join us this Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m. for our annual Michaelmas and Harvest Festival. This is a fun, family event, including a pot luck lunch. You’ll have a chance to experience one of our beautiful seasonal festivals. The children will be performing and if you heard them sing at the Fields of Plenty Breakfast, you know how beautiful their voices are.

A beautiful quilt crafted by several Sunfield moms is being raffled off on October 24th. Tickets are available for $3 each. If you are interested in picking up some tickets please contact Michele in the office - 385-3658. This is a fund-raiser for the early childhood program.

You’re also invited to join us for our next Donor Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, November 18 from 11-12, as we give thanks for you who help make Sunfield possible. We’ll have a tour of the farm and school, answer questions, and get to visit with you. BRING A FRIEND WITH YOU IF YOU’D LIKE. Space is limited so Please RSVP to me at 385.3658, or jmeyer@sunfieldfarm.org. (This is not an “Ask” event).
For your little ones, we have our annual Magical Pumpkin Patch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 23 & 24. Visits includes a walk-through the pumpkin patch, farm animal visits, small hand work activity and a story. The cost is $5/child with adult chaperones free.

Our CSA is winding down, with only 6 weeks left. If you’re interested in joining and receiving our organically grown produce, the cost for the rest of the season is $100.

Please join us for one or more of these fall events on this beautiful piece of earth that is helping feed and nourish many in our community. And thanks for all the ways you support what we do here.
